Dr. Åke Hörnell invented the auto-darkening filter and pioneered the use of the LCD-technique commercially.
Over 40 years ago, Dr. Åke Hörnell revolutionized the welding industry with his invention of the auto-darkening filter, pioneering the commercial use of LCD technology in the process. Recognizing the demanding precision required in modern arc welding, Dr. Hörnell developed a solution that could deliver high-quality results while protecting welders from harmful ultraviolet and infrared radiation.
His innovative auto-darkening filter instantly darkens when the arc is struck, allowing welders to maintain a clear view of their workpiece throughout the entire job without the need to constantly raise and lower their visors. This groundbreaking invention not only improved the working environment for welders but also increased profitability for employers.
In 1976, Dr. Hörnell demonstrated the first welding helmet with an LCD-glass, a patented invention that would go on to sell more than one and a half million units worldwide under the Speedglas brand. This helmet became a symbol of a good working environment, and in 1996, Dr. Hörnell was appointed Honorary Doctor by the Chalmers University of Technology for his achievements.
